Our team of physicians and ancillary staff educators are dedicated to the continuous improvement of knowledge in order to provide World Class Care. We emphasize teamwork and employ state of the art programs based on our Emergency Medicine educational blueprint, a ratio of time dedication to lecture, simulation, and interactive skills based workshops. We believe this framework provides all types of learners the best opportunity to excel.
Some of the educational programs we offer consist of: 1) a cadaver based procedure lab; 2) an evidence based educational forum; 3) a bi-annual teamwork based educational endeavor that focuses on time-sensitive disease processes; 4) Emergency Medicine simulation lab courses; 5) and intra-departmental bedside teaching for Fellows, residents, mid-level providers, students and many other Cleveland Clinic professional staff.

Residency Program
Our Emergency Medicine Residency Program is a combined program sponsored by Case Western Reserve University, MetroHealth Medical Center and the Cleveland Clinic. Our unique dual site (Cleveland Clinic & MetroHealth) program boasts over 200 successful graduates who currently practice in academic and community settings. Ten percent of our graduates pursue fellowship training after graduation. Cleveland Clinic became an ACGME approved second site for our program in 1998. We are a categorical three year program.
Cleveland Clinic main campus Emergency Department cares for over 60,000 patients annually. Our residents spend one third of their overall ED time in the Main Campus ED. They gain exposure to a wide variety of patients with diverse, complex medical conditions:
- Medically and surgically complex patients come to our world-renowned tertiary referral center, including those seeking care at the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute. U.S. News & World Report consistently names Cleveland Clinic as one of the nation's top hospitals in its annual "America's Best Hospitals" survey and has named Cleveland Clinic's heart program No. 1 in the nation since 1995. Our residents also benefit from daily exposure to patients presenting with complicated oncologic, neurologic and transplant-related emergencies.
- A local, urban neighborhood population offers unique challenges and opportunities for personal growth as compassionate providers.
- International patients with complex medical conditions.
- A large community/suburban patient base that reflects the Cleveland Clinic’s evolution and growth in Northeast Ohio.
- Opportunities for involvement with Event Medicine, ED Observation, and exposure to free-standing emergency department practice at our regional sites.
Our residents are afforded graded levels of responsibility, and advance as second and third year residents to manage resuscitation of our most ill patients. They are supported by over 40 board certified Emergency Medicine faculty with publication/research/teaching interests, including Geriatric Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Quality and Patient Safety, and ED Ultrasound. We maintain a minimum ratio of 1:1 attending physician to Emergency Medicine resident on a 24/7 basis. Our residents with academic focus also take an integral role in the teaching and mentoring of medical students in the ED.
The Emergency Medicine residency training experience we offer in the Cleveland Clinic is both complementary and supplementary to the unparalleled experience at MetroHealth Medical Center, a Level One Trauma and Burn Center, and home to the second-busiest aeromedical transport program in the country. We have a strong, collegial working relationship with our friends on the MetroHealth faculty, and together form a complement of over 75 experienced Emergency Medicine specialists.

Research
The Research Department of the Emergency Services Institute (ESI) consists of several personnel. The staff includes Paul Budny, RN, CCRA, CCRP; Allison Lightbody, BA, MPH; Brian Spencer, EMT-P; Stephanie Stoianoff, BSHA, MBA, Research Coordinator; Amy Yamokoski, MA, CCRP, Research Program Administrator; and Sharon E. Mace, MD, FACEP, FAAP, Physician Director of ESI Research.
Paul Budny, RN, CCRA, CCRP has been a registered nurse with Cleveland Clinic for 33 years working with the Pediatric ICU, Clinical Decision Unit, Rapid Response Team and the Emergency Department. In addition, he has worked for various medical device companies serving as a field clinical engineer and account manager for 20 years.
Allison Lightbody, BA, MPH has worked at Cleveland Clinic in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine for 7 years an dis on the hospital HERT team and the DRT team. She is an EMT and is certified in public safety and has Federal Emergency management Training (FEMA) for mass casualties. She has a Master's of Public Health from Cleveland State University and an undergraduate degree in neuroscience from Hiram College.
Brian Spencer, EMT-P has been a paramedic/fire fighter with the City of Cleveland Fire Department for 27 years. He joined the Cleveland Clinic as a paramedic in the emergency department in 2002.
Stephanie Stoianoff, BSHA, MBA is our ESI Research Coordinator. She has 11 years of service at the Cleveland Clinic in cardiovascular, occupational health, and urology prior to joining the emergency department. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Healthcare Administration and a Master's degree in Business Administration.
Amy Yamokoski, MA, CCRP is the Research Administrator in the Center for Clinical Research. She has over 11 years of service with the Cleveland Clinic and provides administrative support for ESI research.
Sharon Mace, MD, FACEP, FAAP is starting her 20th year as a staff physician at Cleveland Clinic and has been the ESI Director of Research since 2012. She is a Professor of Medicine in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University and is dual boarded in emergency medicine and pediatrics. She has over 200 article published in medical literature and two medical textbooks.
