Overview

Institute Summary

The Respiratory Institute (RI) includes the departments of Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Infectious Disease, and Allergy/Immunology. In addition to providing general pulmonary, critical care, infectious disease, and allergy services, the RI provides advanced subspecialty services that attract patients from around the United States and the world. Almost 20% of patients come from outside northeast Ohio and all patients benefit from the expertise of more than 200 staff physicians, 49 fellows, and 108 advance practice providers. The educational activities of the RI include 6 fellowship programs, active participation in student and resident education, and several CME offerings. The RI conducts research activities across the spectrum of basic, translational, and clinical research supported by federal grants, industry-sponsored trials, foundation awards, and philanthropy.

The RI’s presence in all Cleveland Clinic northeast Ohio hospitals and our integrated institute model allowed us to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic with a system-wide approach. Information, education, and best practices were shared by the RI and providers and resources were mobilized across the entire system and beyond. Specialized units were established by the RI that allowed innovation and evaluation of new management approaches, leading to great outcomes for our patients.
